AUSTRALIA

Australia is a large country with 19 million people, most of who live on the east coast. First settled in 1770 as a British colony we initially derived from English, Irish and Scottish stock. Since then there has been continual migration from around the world with a large influx of people from Europe (mainly Greece and Italy) after the Second World War. We are now very much a multi-cultural country with stable Government and steady economic growth.

Our major resources are minerals and agriculture which are exported around the world. The major agricultural exports are beef, wool, cotton and sugar. We have 26 million cattle with about half being tropical breeds run in the tropical and sub tropical regions of northern Australia and the other half being Bos Taurus breeds run in the temperate regions of southern Australia.

About 65 percent of our beef production is exported, making Australia the largest exporter of beef in the world. The major export destinations for beef are Japan, USA, Korea and Canada. About one million live cattle are exported each year to Asian countries and the Middle East. We are currently free of BSE and Foot and Mouth Disease and continue to work hard to maintain our "clean green" image.

The first Limousin cross calf in Australia was born in 1973 and the first French Pure calf was born in 1975. With 5,400 registrations in 2001, Limousins are the largest Continental breed in Australia and rank ninth overall. Limousin bulls are generally used in crossbreeding programs but there is growing recognition of the value of purebred Limousins for commercial beef production.

L’Australie est un grand pays comptant 19 millions d’habitants dont la plupart réside sur la côte est. D’abord une colonie britannique fondée en 1770, nous sommes essentiellement des descendants des Anglais, des Irlandais et des Ecossais. Depuis lors, on observe un flot continuel d’immigrants provenant de partout en Europe avec une grande affluence (de Grecs et d’Italiens en particulier) après la seconde guerre mondiale. Nous sommes maintenant un pays très multi-culturel avec un gouvernement stable et une croissance économique ferme.

Nos principales ressources naturelles sont les minerais et l’agriculture, lesquelles sont exportées sur le plan mondial. Les denrées agricoles que nous exportons le plus sont: le boeuf, la laine, le coton et le sucre.

On dénombre dans le pays 26 milions de bovins dont la moitié environ est formée de races tropicales surtout présentes dans les régions tropicales et sous-tropicales du nord de l’Australie, et l’autre moitié consitutée de races Bos Taurus qui parcourent les régions tempérées du sud de l’Australie. Environ 65% de notre production de viande bovine est exporté, permettant à l’Australie d’ être le premier exportateur de boeuf au monde. Les principaux pays d’exportation de notre produit sont le Japon, les Etats-Unis, la Corée et le Canada. Environ un million d’ animaux vivants sont expédiés chaque année vers les pays de l’Asie et du Moyen-Orient. Nous sommes en ce moment exempts de BSE (Maladie de la vache folle) et de fièvre aphteuse et nous poursuivons nos efforts afin de maintenir notre réputation d’ offrir un environnement vert et propre ( "clean green").

Le premier veau croisé Limousin est né en Australie en 1973 et le premier sujet Limousin pur-sang français en 1975. Avec 5 400 enregistrements en 2001, le Limousin est la race continentale dominante en Australie et se classe au 9e rang parmi toutes les autres races bovines. Les taureaux Limousins sont habituellement utilisés dans des programmes de croisements, mais de plus en plus on semble reconnaître la valeur du Limousin pur-sang dans la production bovine commerciale.
