The Limousin Breed in Uruguay

Limousin Breed was introduced in Uruguay in 1964 by an agreement between our country and France. The first animals arrived in a Research Centre in our country. As a result of a thesis made by Agr. Eng. Juan Carlos Scarsi from the Research Institute La Estanzuela, a series of crossbreedings were analysed and the results of Limousin crossbreedings showed a yield of 15-20% above the other breedings.

In 1979 Dr. Julio Severi, Dr. Hugo López Shannon and Mr. Edgardo Martínez Irigoyen founded the Uruguayan Limousin Breeders Association and one bull and five cows were imported from Argentina, the cows were inseminated with French bulls.

In 1979 the first Limousin full blood born in the country was registered in Uruguay.

In 1984 the first full blood born from embryo transfer was registered.

The Breed is in expansion. There are 70 associates in the Limousin

Association, half of them register pedigree. There is much more cattlemen that are introducing Limousin on a crossbreeding basis.

600 bulls are sold each year in the country which are used over 100.000 cows.

My Father Mr. Severi is one of the Limousin pioneers in Uruguay and has one of the largest Limousin herd in the country, not only full blood but in pure bred as well, the farm has a very strict selection criterium.

Uruguay is one of the smallest country in South America with 177.500 km2 and 3.300.000 inhabitants. Capital city: Montevideo. The territory is located south of Brazil and east from Argentina, (latitude 35). The territory is smoothly ondulated what we call "cuchillas" with a maximum height of 500m.

The climate is mild with hot summers and with no cold weather.

The economy is mostly based upon agriculture production, and cattle

Breeding is considered more important than agriculture.

Our official language is the Spanish and the major religion is Catholic, as we have been a Spanish Colony.

The country is independent since 1825 and the population has had a strong democratic political feeling since then. The enormous majority of our population came from Europe (mainly Spain and Italy) from immigrations waves in 1850 and 1900. Half of the inhabitants are in Montevideo and the rest divided in 18 states ("departamentos").

We have 600 km of coast on the Rio de la Plata and Atlantic Ocean with beautiful seaside cities, the most important of them being Punta del Este.

La race Limousine au Uruguay

La race Limousine a fait son apparition au Uruguay en 1964 par accord avec la France. Les premiers bovins sont allez directement au centre de recherche du pays. Dans cette recherche une thèse a était écrite par Juan Carlos Scarsi de l’Institude de recherche d’Estanzuela. Un mombre de croisés a été etudié et les resultas était que la production de limousin était 15-20% de plus que les autre croisés.

En 1979 Dr. Julio Severi, Dr. Hugo López Shannon et Mr. Edgardo Martínez Irigoyen ont commancé l’Association Limousin de "l’Uruguayan Limousin Breeders Association". Ils ont importé une taureaux et 5 vaches de l’Argentine, les 5 vaches ont était inséminées avec un taureaux français.

En 1979 le premier 100% Limousin français est né et enrigstré au Uruguay.

En 1984 le premier 100% Limousin français est né d’un embryon transferé et enregistré.

Le développement de la race ce fais à tout les jour. Il y a 70 membres associés avec L’association Limousin et la moitié de cela sont enregistré. L’introduction de Limousin ce fais à tous les jours par des éleveurs commercial.

600 taureaux sont vendu tous les ans dans le pay pour utiliées avec 100.000 de vaches.

Mon père M. Severi est un des pioneers de Limousine au Uruguay et à un des plus grand troupeau dans le pay, avec des 100% français et de race pure, la ferme suit un criter très strict pour leur selection.

L’Uruguay est un petit pay en Amérique du Sud avec une surperficie de 177 500km2 et 3300000 d’habitants. La capitale est Montevideo. Le territoire est situé au sud du Brésil et à l’est de l’Argentine.

Le climat est moyen avec des étés très chaud et pas de température froide.

L’economie est basé sur la production agricole, à noter que la production de bovind est considéré plus importante que la production agricole.

La langue officiel est l’Espagnole et la religion est Catholique, nous sommes une colonie Espagnole.
